My name is Kelsey, not Roofresh, but Roo IS my nickname. I live in the Phoenix area with my husband and we are having fun being newlyweds and going on crazy adventures together. We like finding new hangouts, food, art, music and friends; so that's pretty much what my blog is about. You'll find a bit of fashion, design, nutrition and family sprinkled throughout my content, or anything else that catches my eye at the moment. A Little Bit of Los Angeles - {Art in the Streets}

My last blog post about our trip to LA was not all positive. Yes, we spent a lot of money on getting our car towed and had a rough patch while we were there, but it wasn't all bad. In fact, there was some money that was very well spent on the 'Art in the Streets' exhibit. If you haven't had a chance to see it and you are in the LA area, DEFINITELY go.

I have to say that my husband is a bit of a trend spotter; he was into mustache tattoos before they were popular, liked Johnny Cupcakes before anyone knew who he was and appreciated Banksy before 'Exit Through the Gift Shop' was released. He saw his first graffiti film when he was in elementary school and has been intrigued ever since. So when we went to the exhibit, he was in art heaven.

Here are the shots I took in the exhibit...so amazing.

There's not even a way for me to show you how cool this was, pictures really don't do it justice.

I tried to edit the photos as little as possible so that you could see them for what they are, but the lighting was very different from room to room and no flash photography was permitted. I did what I could to do them justice. I took SO many more photos than this, but it would take me all night to post them, so I cut it short (after I added five more). What did you think? Practical Art

When Jim and I went to the Clarendon in Phoenix last month, I was really inspired and attracted to their window coverings. That sounds funny, but I thought this was a great way to decorate but be practical and add color to a room all at the same time. This piece was a canvas painting that was modified to run along a track. The track was just metal tubing on the wall and the painting was attached with some PVC* that went on the outside of the tubing. They left theirs white, but if the industrial look isn't for you, the hardware could always be hand painted or even spray painted a uniform color to go along with your motif.

*When shopping for PVC or other plastic/hardware items please look for safe plastic items. If there is a "3" above the "V" on the material that could mean that it is not made out of a safe plastic. If items have a distinct vinyl smell to them, it could mean that they are made out of polyvinyl chloride which is a potentially hazardous material.

Scherenschnitte


I would love to say that this pretty piece of artwork was done by myself, but sadly I am still aspiring to create works such as this one here. This is actually a paper cut-out by a lovely artist by the name of Cynthia Ferguson from Salt Lake City, Utah. I ran across Cindy's blog while doing research on paper cutting for my own work.
I recently started cutting random shapes and objects out of paper to put on the front of some custom journals that I've been working on. I was having tons of fun thinking of different shapes to make into sillhouettes for my projects and started doing some internet research to try and improve my craft. As I browsed the internet I found that there was actually a name for what I was doing called "Scherenschnitte". It's a German name which litterally means "scissor cuts" and is pronounced "sharon-sh-net" (according to wikipedia :)). In looking up this topic I stumbled across Cindy's blog and some pretty impressive work.

Here is another piece by her which is one of my favorites.The detail on this is CRAZY and it's hard to believe that it's all paper! I am really inspired by her art and while I have enjoyed my small pieces that I've been working on I can't wait to get better-who knows, maybe one day I could be so talented!
