About Roofresh

My name is Kelsey, not Roofresh, but Roo IS my nickname. I live in the Phoenix area with my husband and we are having fun being newlyweds and going on crazy adventures together. We like finding new hangouts, food, art, music and friends; so that's pretty much what my blog is about. You'll find a bit of fashion, design, nutrition and family sprinkled throughout my content, or anything else that catches my eye at the moment. My blog has changed a lot over the last year, but you'll see that it's really just a record of our lives together; our public journal.

Best Around - Windsor

If you're a local around my parts you may have heard of a little spot called Postino. Well if you love wine, cheese, prosciutto or anything of the sort, head that way. Even if you are from my neck of the woods, you may not have heard of what I like to think of Postino's cousin restaurant (parent or sister just didn't sound right to me), Windsor. Postino's founder, Craig DeMarco, has created another crowd pleaser that is not only visually stimulating, but they have really freakin' good food too!

Last weekend Jim and I ventured into the heart of Phoenix and had ourselves some linner (lunch-dinner) at the mid-town newbie.
I could look at the titles all night long...at least they're still good for somethin'!
Fish of the Day (Salmon), that's roasted tomatoes, and basil-almond pesto on top. Delish!
Jim's Curry-rubbed chicken sandwich, with succotash.
...and this is what I said after I ate Jo's Church Potatoes, the best food I've ever put in my mouth. Period.

I have to say that the food and service was pretty great for us that day, it's definitely worth a little detour if you're going into town any time soon. Oh, and don't forget to stop by Churn after dinner; their own little ice cream parlor is joined at the architectural hip to Windsor and YOU CAN BUILD YOUR OWN ICE CREAM COOKIE SANDWICH. Do I need to say more?

Keep it real,
Roo

Ps. All you Gilbert-ites (ites? Idk) if you haven't heard the rumors, there is supposed to be a Postino opening up on Gilbert road right across the street from Liberty. Right now it is scheduled to open in January. Woo hoo! I know we'll be there waiting for the doors to open!

Best Around - Matt's Big Breakfast

It's been a while since I've done a 'Best Around' post...well it's been a while since I've posted anything, but I'll get to my crazy life in another post. I wanted to share our Matt's Big Breakfast experience with everyone. For a long time now, we've heard great things about this place and based on the line that is always wrapped around the building we have assumed that the rumors were true. Ironically, we went for lunch...what can I say, we were there and the line was much shorter!
Classic diner counter tops
BEST and I mean BEST lemonade I've ever had. Infused with honey and fresh berries, it was the perfect blend of sweet and tart!
Jim's homemade burger...it was a pretty tasty patty
My chili was in my top 3 chili's EVER! (Which looked much nicer when I got it, but I was too excited to dive in and forgot to take a picture)
While the breakfast specials did look great, we were happy with our lunch; just another excuse to go back!

Have you ever been to Matt's Big Breakfast, or as I affectionately like to refer to it as MMB? What did you get? I'd love to know what your favorite breakfast joint is!

Keep it real,

Roo

Best Around - True Food Kitchen

I haven't done a "Best Around" in a while and I think I found something worthy when Jim and I went out on Saturday. We were out and about and decided to stop by True Food Kitchen at the Biltmore in Phoenix. It was our first time there and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. Everything that they make is organic and in house. I loved how the walk-way up to it was lined with planters containing fresh potted herbs and even the plant decor throughout the restaurant was REAL! I think that is rare. In addition to seeing what you are going to be eating, all of the cooking and prep is done OUT IN THE OPEN. Like literally, they had (very posh looking) prep tables out in the open, with very clean looking cooks. I couldn't get enough of this place!

I couldn't stop thinking "this is how food is supposed to be." Lately I have had this overwhelming feeling that most of the food that I eat is horrible-and Jim and I actually try! Seriously, ever since we saw "Food Inc." (around April of last year) we have tried to buy organic and be more conscious of what we put into our bodies. It's just so hard to TRUST what we are given as consumers. I feel that it is so sad that it takes so much extra energy to eat what used to just come naturally to us 100 years ago! Our society and money driven businesses have perverted everything that nature intended for us, but True Food Kitchen is taking one step forward to provide REAL food for consumers! If I could eat here every day I would, and I bet I would feel better!
I got Teryaki Vegetables with Tofu and Brown Rice (My lunch was so green, I was trying to eat outside of the box, and it was good!)
Jim got Carne Asada Tacos that were AMAZING!..and those beans, those were the best beans I have ever had in my life!
Check it out! It marks everything on the menu that is vegan, vegetarian or gluten free (which was quite a lot!)

True Food Kitchen is a Fox restaurant concept and I have to say that I have been very impressed by most of the Fox restaurants that I have been to. For being somewhat of a chain, they do not skimp on quality. Something that I liked about TFK was the portion sizes. Jim's tacos were three small tacos, and my brown rice to vegetable ratio was exactly what it should be-more veggies, less brown rice!

Overall I give True Food Kitchen an A, if you want to check it out it's a great day-date destination. (You can check out the Apple store or Teavana afterwards too!)

Keep it real,

Roo

Best Around - Chelsea's Kitchen

For the perfect meal on a perfect Saturday afternoon, Jim and I went to Chelsea's Kitchen. I pretty much always get the mac and cheese and either short rib tacos or the short rib dinner, depending on if it's lunch or dinner. It's always perfect. The restaurant is nestled against a canal that you hardly notice due to the lovely greenery of the patio.

I have to say, this is probably in my top 5 places to eat EVER. It's not just the great comfort food, but the atmosphere, the wait staff, and the great scenery that make it a special repeat spot for us. With that said, here are my iPhone pictures!
The view of the bar from our seat
The view of the old people from our table, he he, just kidding, just the rest of the patio
Hipsta-Jim Bob, or should I say "Devil" Hipsta-Jim Bob
Good ol' fashioned Coca-Cola from the bottle
Ahhh, Best Mac and Cheese!
Green Chili Burger, awesome seasoned fries
Short Rib Tacos. Soooo gooood!
Always greeted and given a great farewell with a complimentary cookie...
The decor of Chelsea's is bold and unique. Key pieces match those of it's sister restaurant La Grande Orange Pizzeria.

So long Chelsea's! Until next time!

Best Around

Last weekend Jim and I were on our way to the Arizona Taco Festival in Scottsdale and after seeing the line and the crowd of people waiting to get into something that honestly, didn't look that great, we went for plan B. I'm going to warn you right now, this isn't a "Best Around" to tell you about how awesome the food is. The food at Culinary Dropout is good, but a little pricey for a Fox restaurant concept in my opinion; this feature is a spotlight on service, presentation, and decor.

I had to admire the chandelier lighting throughout the restaurant. It was extravagant, unique, and very eye-catching. You'll notice the industrial lighting in the background, this was all over the restaurant-even in the bathroom-and gave a good balance to the romantic feel of the chandeliers.

I did LOVE the server station/kitchen setup. I think this is the first restaurant I've been to that I can actually comment on the appearance of the server stations! I've worked in my fair share of joints and I have never admired their practical-space setups. All of the little details from the chalk-board wall (love the pig!) to the deli slicer and even their pots and pans! Oh and rad textured, purple wall.

This was the view from our seat. You can see that all of the seating in the entire restaurant gave a feel of exclusivity; like you were invited to a special secret society (at least that's how I felt :).

We started with their signature drink, the "Clown Punch" with gin, a blend of juices and pomegranate foam. I don't really like gin, but I would probably order this one again. We shared it due to its size, plus I can't drink too much sweet all at once. If sweet is not your thing I would definitely avoid! I, however, really liked the pomegranate foam on this.

Next, our appetizer was the Soft Pretzel and Provolone Fondue combo. I happened to love it, it was different and fun, Jim on the other hand thought it was just okay.

During the course of the visit, our server was polite and attentive when needed, but not overbearing or for lack of a better word, annoying. Also, the rest of the staff, other servers and hostesses, were very friendly as well.

Our main courses came with great timing, an everything looked great! I got the Short Rib Pasta and Jim got the Fried Chicken with potato puree and honey biscuits.  Now I have to give a disclaimer before giving my opinion on the food: Jim and I are really into eating out and finding fun, new and exciting places to eat. We are used to fried chicken from Rosco's (best fried chicken of my life) and short ribs from Chelsea's Kitchen (will have to share those another time), so nothing really compares. I will say that the food was good, unique and satisfying. If I'm speaking in all honesty, my short ribs were a little fatty and Jim's chicken and potatoes, a little salty. Other than that, I can't really complain. The chicken had a great crunch to it and the sauce for the pasta was pretty amazing.

The menu had quite a few other intriguing items on it that might lure me back, and seeing as how we didn't order off of the Antipasti menu (a sushi style, pick your own chart) we might find ourselves wandering back. Last but not least, we got dessert. Another unique aspect to the menu was a caramel corn bowl (also available on top of custard).

Overall I feel that we had a good experience here. I usually don't like to give a review or opinion on a place until I've been a couple of times; you never know for sure if something was a fluke or usually a different way until you go a more than once. It was definitely a better alternative to a hot, crowded taco festival! For a unique experience, check it out.

Best Around

Gallo Blanco @ The Clarendon

A couple of weekends ago Jim and I had a fun little staycation at the Clarendon in Phoenix. They were having a great special on room rates for the holiday weekend, so I thought "why not!' and surprised him.

Jim and I have been fans of the Clarendon for a while now. In our opinion it's a hidden gem with a sweet pool and occassional rooftop bar. One nice thing about it is that is has its own signature restaurant, Gallo Blanco, (yes that means white rooster). With awesome fresh guacamole, rib eye carne asada tacos and the option of getting crepes or steak and eggs all day long, I don't know how you can go wrong with this place!

Here are some shots of our yummy guacamole and prickly pear margaritas! (We had tacos too but we gobbled them up before I had time to remember to take a picture.) :)

Bear with me on the last couple of pictures, they were taken via my iPhone.
Conclusion after the weekend-great find! If you haven't gone I recommend it; it's a nice change from the norm!

Best Around

My husband Jim and I love going out to eat. Don't get me wrong, most nights we eat at home and try to make something relatively healthy and cost-effective, but we love new places and great food. I wouldn't consider us "foodies", we aren't sophistocated enough for that; I would say that we could maybe be considered foodies in training. With all of that said, I would like to share some of our favorite little spots that we've found and hopefully you can check them out and enjoy them as much as we have!
Tempe, Az
This was the location of our first date. (Awwwe) Jim was trying to take me to all of these fancy places and impress me and when I finally called him out on it he suggested Cornish Pasty. His exact words were "Fine, I'll take you to my favorite restaurant, and the average entree is $8.50."
So we pulled up to Cornish Pasty, a small, cozy little restaurant right off the cusp of ASU and had a seat at their crammed high top bar. The menu has a handful of obscure beers, some microbrews and 3+ pages of delicious pastys.
What is a pasty? (Past-ee)
Words don't do a pasty justice but in the words of Jim "a pasty is everything a hot pocket wishes it could be." Here's a picture of a pasty, but it tastes better than this picture looks (which is pretty darn good)! You need to go to a Cornish Pasty and get one!
