About Roofresh

My name is Kelsey, not Roofresh, but Roo IS my nickname. I live in the Phoenix area with my husband and we are having fun being newlyweds and going on crazy adventures together. We like finding new hangouts, food, art, music and friends; so that's pretty much what my blog is about. You'll find a bit of fashion, design, nutrition and family sprinkled throughout my content, or anything else that catches my eye at the moment. My blog has changed a lot over the last year, but you'll see that it's really just a record of our lives together; our public journal.

Cabin Time

I didn't blog all weekend because we were in Happy Jack with my side of the family, enjoying some time away from the Internet and cell phones...it was a rough four days! I didn't even really take that many pictures, it was really nice to not be worrying about getting the right shot for the blog, or getting my phone out in time to catch a photo for Instagram. Don't get me wrong, I love blogging and the process of blogging, but this weekend it was nice to just enjoy life, instead of document it.
I think we need a little more of this in our life. What about you? Blogging get you down sometimes? Maybe it's not blogging, maybe it's keeping up with texting, Facebook, Twitter, family, a social life...How do you unwind, or do you?

Keep it real,
Roo

Pocket Prayers - {By My Mom}

So I have a no-giveaway policy currently in place for my blog...that doesn't mean that it may not change from time to time when a good reason arises. The reason today happens to be my mom! Let me give you some history before I explain what I'm giving away:

You see about 10 years ago, my dad was the senior pastor at a church called Superstition Springs Community Church (which is now Mission) when he started to have some serious health problems. It started with some small things like tingling in his hand, and some small loss of motility and feeling in his limbs. After some X-rays and a little more research, doctors informed him that he had a bone spur on one of his vertebrae that was putting pressure on his spinal cord and was most likely the cause of his symptoms. He went into an emergency surgery that weekend and had it removed...but that didn't stop all of his problems.

After time passed and more research was done and more doctors consulted, it was discovered that my dad has a rare disease called Neural Sarcoidosis. Sarcoidosis, generally, is when someone has swelling in a particular area of their body, like the spinal cord or lungs. It's very common for swelling to occur in the lymph nodes and respiratory system. It is also an autoimmune disease, so the immune system is very compromised. My dad has swelling in a few areas, but the majority of his is in his spinal cord.

The only options to treat Sarcoidosis are pain medications and steroids to decrease the swelling. (My dad opted not to do steroids and oddly enough, I've actually heard rumors that people who chose to do steroid treatment may now have a shorter life expectancy, specific to the use by Sarcoid patients.) Researchers and doctors don't know what causes it, or how to cure it, and a lot of times people die due to secondary illnesses related to poor immune function (celebrities such as Bernie Mac and Reggie White died of complications related to Sarcoidosis). We have been so fortunate to have my dad stay as healthy as he has (considering).

So what does all of this have to do with a giveaway on my blog?

Well during this time, our family had a really hard time adjusting and my dad's condition was very uncertain. He ended up stepping down from his position as senior pastor and retired early. With his health drastically changing in a short period of time, he became very tired and lethargic, he was limited in a lot of his physical abilities and he started having panic attacks and serious depression issues. While all of this was going on, my mom did what she knew how to do best which was...pray!

Every day my mom would get up early and go for walks. On her walks she would take note cards with bible verses and inspirational prayers. She would read them over and over to try and memorize them so that in times of crisis, she could find peace. It was funny because over time her cards started to morph...first they were note cards, then smaller cards similar to business cards which turned into hole-punched cards with a key ring holding them together and finally she just had to be so creative and she started printing them on fancy scrapbook paper and with cute fonts. People would see her pull them out at a Starbucks or at church and ask her about them. She began making repeats decks and giving them to friends what were going through hard times as well. They became very inspirational and she started creating more of a demand as well.

I think that as my mom's pocket prayer repertoire grew, so did she, and I truly think her dedication to prayer and scripture got my family through some very dark times.

Fast-forward about 9 years; now my parents run both a non-profit organization called 'Something's Gotta Change' where they help small churches and communities in Malawi build up their leadership, as well as 'Pocket Prayers' their prayer deck ministry. My mom has started taking requests for different decks. She has choices like 'Loving Your Husband' or 'Loving You Wife,' 'Fear Not,' 'Love,' and her newest 'A Teacher's Prayer.'

'A Teacher's Prayer' was a pocket prayer that was requested, and with the school year coming to an end, it's actually a really great gift to give to your child's teachers to say thank you. It's also a way to buy handmade and support a good cause. The decks are good gifts even if you're not sure whether or not someone is religious, because they have other encouraging words as well and each topic has been carefully planned out to help people along in their struggles. Sometimes, people just like that you thought of them too. :)

I'm giving away one of the teacher decks, and here's how to enter the give away if you would like to win it:

Leave a comment below telling me who you would like to give pocket prayer to (or you can tell me that you want it for yourself too if that's the case). Leave your email after the comment so that I know how to contact you if you win (if you are not comfortable leaving your email, you can put a link to your Facebook page or twitter so that I can contact you). On May 5th I will announce the winner and you can claim your prize!

Even if you don't enter the contest, I really encourage you to check out the Pocket Prayers site and see what it has to offer...there really is something for every need!

It's Ma Birfday...

I have the most awesome face going on here in front of my candle-less birthday cake. The photo of me fake blowing out the candles turned out a bit blurry, so instead you get my half-surprised, not ready for the photo look.

Today is my birthday, but it was already celebrated last week, seeing as how today is Easter and all (I thought I'd let God get some attention today as well), other than Facebook messages, it doesn't feel too much like my birthday. I will say though, that as I reach the quarter-of-a-century mark I took a little time to reflect on where I'm at, and I have to say....I really like it! Despite a lot of stress lately and some huge changes in my life, I am really, truly happy and while I couldn't have imagined where I would be right now, (even six months ago) I would not change a thing!

I have to thank my husband first of all, I can not believe that we're married sometimes, and I love our moments that we just look at each other and giggle. Our family and friends are amazing! I can't count how many times we've had people take time out of their schedules to hang with us or help us with a project or move. We are so blessed. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my new job. I am so happy and so excited at my new place, and while I'm still learning, I know that I will continue to be challenged. Finally, I love our home! Even after growing up in Arizona, I'm not sick of it and while I would love to see new places and travel, I love the weather, the culture and that my family is here!

Happy Birthday to ME!

Off to Tucson I Went!

Before all of the craziness of last weekend and this week, I got to steal away for a day and visit my niece and nephew (and my bro and sis-in-law too). Here are a few pictures that my mom sent me, they're a little pixelated, but oh well, you get the idea.
Classic Zoe.
Sweet Mari
Asher!
Me and my big booty!
The bro

And of course, some Instagram pics.
Asher thought my iPhone was his new toy...

I wish I had more time to visit them, but I sure had fun while I was there!

Most People Your Age...

'Most people your age' has become my least favorite phrase lately. With my 25th birthday quickly approaching I have been informed of the fact that I've already been in my mid-twenties for two years now, that I'm about to embark on my late twenties and that my early twenties were gone a long time ago.  Well, I still say that 25 is 'mid-twenties' but apparently once you hit the half-way-to-thirty mark, it doesn't even matter anymore.

"Most people your age have it a lot worse, one little cavity really isn't so bad," (straight from my dentist's mouth). "Most people your age have skin that clears up pretty well...we'll have to see where it goes from here." Wow it sucks that I'm my age and I'm not most people. If I wasn't already freaked out and sensitive about it enough, I feel that plenty of people around me are making sure that I remember the fact that it's my big quarter-century b-day year.

I don't know what it is, but there's something about turning 25 that is really starting to grate on me. I think subconsciously I feel that my twenties are half way over and that life has gone into fast forward mode and that before I know it, I'm going to be in my thirties. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with being in your thirties, heck, my husband is :) but my mind insists on tricking me into believing that the party stops at 30 and that I no longer have the option of a life. It's like "quick, make sure you get all of the fun stuff done, thirty is almost here!"

I can't figure out why I feel this way...maybe when I was younger I imagined things differently...but that doesn't make sense because I TOTALLY love my life! I've got a perfect husband, a great family, awesome friends, and the raddest dogs you'll ever meet.

So in preparation for 25, I'm making a list of all of the things that make this year awesome, and everything that I'm grateful for...

LOVING LIFE!

If you haven't noticed, I can tend to focus on the negative and get bogged down in the 'what if?' When I stop and think about it, I have a lot of great things going on and if I focus too much on matters that are unimportant, life is going to be in fast forward.

Side story: Jim never watches movies in 'real time' he always fast forwards them on the feature that allows him to speed it up, but still understand what people are saying...everyone just has Mickey Mouse voice. The speed at the bottom of the screen says '1.5>>>' so our friends call this 'watching movies in 1.5'. I don't know why he does this, I couldn't possibly watch movies in 1.5 all of the time, but he says that he loves the satisfaction of finding out what happens...even if it's a movie he doesn't really care about (i.e. the other day when he rented 'Yogi Bear').

What was the point of that story? Well, it's a good mantra to have...

"Don't live life in 1.5!"

So what do you think? Are you living life in 'real time' or '1.5'? Do you feel old, or feel your age...or feel young for your age?!?! (If so, what's your secret?!?) Let me know!

Roo

This Christmas I Dressed Up Like Peter Pan...

This post is a recap of our Christmas shenanigans. First things first, you may remember this post about all of the toys that I used to have as a little kid that I said I would probably have on my Christmas list if I was still a big kid (ha ha that was really confusing). Well my awesome mom read that and despite having moved their whole life to a new house after 15 years, she still had a handful of those toys. She didn't say anything, she just waited till I looked closer at the tree and noticed all of the old-school toys waiting for me underneath.
Mom my is awesome.

So if you have ever been to a Christmas at our house, you might know that my uncle gives...interesting gifts. He always means well, but we occasionally get a giggle out of some of them. I think this year he gave me the best gift EVER! He gave me a hat that my grandpa and grandma had brought him back from Austria one year. He said that it reminded him of the fedoras that my hubby wears all of the time and he thought that I might like it. Well my sister and I had a great time taking an unnecessary amount of pictures in this hat...
The Hat
These are the pictures that my sister "directed"
The Serious pose
"Smoking the Pipe"
Too Cool
The "pensive" look

My sister really wanted to go "all out" so we gave her my scarf and made her look very "woodland-chic"

I haven't even reached the best part of our Christmas tale, my sister and I are in a constant argument over ownership of things that we grew up with. It usually goes something like "hey that was mine," "no it was mine, you just thought it was yours because you had it after me..." and so on and so forth. Needless to say we both discovered the Sylvanian Family toys and had a little bit of an argument out of it.
It started off great with us excited and ready to play :)
We started dividing up who got the bears, rabbits, raccoons etc.
..but then things started getting serious. The negotiations began..
And it got REALLY serious
Hey, you better watch it camera man!

But guess who won, guess who always wins...

Well I hope that you all had a great Christmas as well, hopefully violent-free, playing with new toys. :)

Keep it real,

Roo

Ps. The Simon still doesn't have batteries...

Baby Sprinkle

Something I did not realize until this year is that after you have one baby, apparently you're not supposed to get a second shower...WHAT?!? That's totally not fair and really sucks if your second baby is a different sex than the first, because you really have to buy everything all over again. I stumbled upon this post from Kelli Murray a while back and decided that a baby "sprinkle" would be a perfect idea for my currently preggo sis-in-law Mari.

I had so much fun planning little details and I think that having a more laid-back feel than a baby shower was just what she needed anyway. We had mini cupcakes, fruit, and light appetizer feeling snacks to make everything feel a bit casual. We didn't play games, just had a small, intimate crowd who gave Mari advice and shared memories with her.

Here is my little post-card style invite that I designed and sent out. (Or at least a version of it)
I created this by using clip art from my fave PuglyPixel.

Again, for this craft I used clip art from PuglyPixel.com as the background medallion and found the heart-shaped font on there as well. I'll admit that I cut every one of those by hand and I was getting finger cramps towards the end!
And if you know me, it's just not a party without cupcakes...but these were mini because it was a "mini shower."
Due to my lack of cake stands, I improvised and we used stacks of books with doilies..sigh, I love doilies.
Now this little activity was special to me because there's a story behind it.

Right after we got married my mom gave us a big box that had all of my stuff from my childhood in it. It had baby clothes, homework assignments, report cards, projects; you name it, it was in there. I stumbled across a little letter hidden in the piles of paper. It was a letter written to me on the day that I was born from my grandparents. It had my birth date at the top and they explained in the letter how they had prayed for me and were excited that I was now here! I was so touched by this, and really more impressed that my mom had hung on to it and that I actually got to read it as a grown women.

That was special.

In efforts to create a special memento for the soon to be Zoe Mae, I put out a "Happy Thoughts for Zoe Mae" station. I had little pieces of girly scrapbook paper punched into the shape of flowers and pens with a little box to drop the finished product in. People dated it and put happy little pieces of advise and what they were feeling as they anticipated her arrival on the back of the papers for us to give to Mari and eventually Zoe.
Here is the lovely soon to be mother (again), Mari Norton
..And my sweet little nephew gettin' down on some cupcake action
Our beautiful friend, Julia Hull
I was trying to get a nice shot of my sweet little grandma, but check out my sister's face in the background. Ha ha!
Oh my gosh, how adorable is this picture? Nathan, Julia's son, was being so well behaved in the next room, so I snuck over to take a quick pic. Doesn't he make your heart melt?
Wrapping up at the end of the party here. It was a nice day of talking and hopefully relaxing for Mari. I love my sister-in-law and I hope that she felt showered upon, even though it was just a sprinkle. :)

Keep it real,

Roo
