About Roofresh

My name is Kelsey, not Roofresh, but Roo IS my nickname. I live in the Phoenix area with my husband and we are having fun being newlyweds and going on crazy adventures together. We like finding new hangouts, food, art, music and friends; so that's pretty much what my blog is about. You'll find a bit of fashion, design, nutrition and family sprinkled throughout my content, or anything else that catches my eye at the moment. My blog has changed a lot over the last year, but you'll see that it's really just a record of our lives together; our public journal.

It's my blirthday!

So if you haven't already guessed, I made up a new word...blirthday is my new word for "blog-birthday". It's a little silly that I'm celebrating this, but it's a big deal for me! Other than being married, there's nothing that I did this year for the whole year other than blogging; that's a big accomplishment for me! Keeping my blog has definitely helped me document some changes, share my life with family and friends, and meet new peeps!

I decided that in honor of my 1-year-blirthday that I would share some of my favorite posts from the year with you. Please feel free to click around...happy blirthday to me!

Holiday Cupcakes-October 28, 2010
Halloweeeeen!-November 1, 2010
Our Christmas Present-December 15, 2010
Festive Pom Tutorial-March 9, 2011

I couldn't put them all here obviously, but I had a hard time picking out my faves. I realized how diverse my blog really is! I really want to say that I appreciate everyone who has supported me this year, read my blog, helped with design, commented and silently followed...oh and my husband and my mom; my number one and two fans.

Keep on keeping it real,
Roo

Roofresh + Helping Hands in Africa

So I'm trying a little experiment here, and I would love it if you all would take a minute to help me out. You see I noticed that my little 'followers' section in my sidebar was starting to get close to 100. Now it's always fun to see more people show an interest in your blog, and it is somewhat validating to watch your stats go up from month to month, but that's truly not my reason for starting a blog. While reasons for blogging may change, I think that I can confidently say at this point that my blog is a 'personal blog' and mostly a collection of my life stories, events and things that excite me.

With all of that said, many bloggers chose to do giveaways when they pass big milestones with their readers. For me 100 is a big milestone and I cannot tell you enough how grateful I am for those of you who read my blog and faithfully check-in to see what is going on in my life.  Compared to other blogs, 100 may not be a big number, but I'm quite happy with it. Since I'm just on the cusp of 100, I still want to offer something to recognize this stepping stone, however, giveaways just aren't my style. I know that they are popular, and usually work out well for all parties involved, but it's not a direction that I am wanting to go with my blog at this point in time. Instead, I have decided to do a 'non-giveaway' and make a donation in the name of my blog to an organization which has significance to me and which I have a history of involvement with.
(Sorry for the horrible quality of these)
Helping Hands in Africa is a non-profit organization which provides assistance and relief to communities in South Africa from hot meals, to health care and AIDS assistance and even mental health. I have a personal investment in the organization, because in 2005 I got to go to South Africa for 10 days and see these communities first hand. Our lives seem to become mundane on a daily basis, but some of the people that I spent time with, touched, hugged, and connected with can only dream of a mundane existence.

So here's the plan...

My Part: Once I get to 100 followers, I will donate $50 of my money to Helping Hands in Africa.

Your Part: You have the option of making a pledge, any amount that you want, and over the following month for every follower or new reader via google over 100, a donation will be made to Helping Hands.

Example: I am at 99 readers, and you have pledged to donate 10 cents for every reader over 100. I finally get my #100 reader and for every follower after that you will donate 10 cents. This opportunity will be open for the whole month following my 100-follower-mark and at the end of one month I will tally up the followers and multiply that number by your pledge.

So if I get 64 new followers in that month, you will be making a donation of $6.40 to Helping Hands in Africa.

I will be keeping the names of everyone confidential, but will be accepting pledges via email, and do a progress update every week. At the end of the month, if you sent a pledge, I will email you back with the total amount and you can pay via PayPal. If you would like to do a one time only donation, you can do that as well via PayPal, user name Roofresh@gmail.com.

If you're strapped for cash, you can still play a role in this endeavour, all you have to do is click on 'Follow'!
So this is obviously an experiment. Who knows, I may be the only one donating, but at least Helping Hands in Africa will get an extra $50, and trust me, $50 goes a LONG way there!

I would like to say thank you again for all of you have chosen to read my blog up until now, and even for those of you who are followers of Roofresh on Facebook and Twitter. I really appreciate all of the support!

Keep it real,

Roo

Ps. If you have any additional questions about the donation process or the 'non-giveaway' please feel free to email me at Roofresh{at}Gmail{dot}com

Bear Love Feature - {HiFi Weddings}

I wanted to share this cool post that was done about the invites that Jim and I did for our wedding. I've posted our invites on the blog before, but Ashley from HiFi Weddings recently did a post on them and I really think that you should mosey on over to her blog if you haven't already. The general idea behind HiFi is real weddings, couples and the music they chose as inspiration for all those who appreciate music. It really is a neat concept and a such fun blog to read!
Cute lil' blog huh? What's your favorite song to hear at a wedding? Did you have an awesome playlist for yours? I'd love to hear what songs really get you movin'!

Keep it real,

Roo

You can follow me...if you want to

So I want to start by saying THANK YOU! to everyone who follows my blog so far. I love hearing your responses and every time I see that someone else is following me, I get super excited! I know it's silly, but it's nice to know that people are discovering Roofresh! I'm still pretty humble in my numbers, but it makes me appreciate my 'fans' that much more.

I kind of had to laugh when I stumbled upon my bloglovin' yesterday morning. I saw on my referring sites that someone had gone to my blog from my bloglovin' account, which I had actually started a long time ago and have done nothing with it. I actually have FOUR whole followers on it now, ha ha (if you are reading, thank you too!) I don't know how people found it, or just wanted to add it on their own, but if you have a bloglovin' or want to find out more about it, I added a cute little link at the bottom of my sidebar if you want to check it out. Now it won't be so hard if you want to follow me. ;)

Keep it real,

Roo

Goals...Dun Dun Duuuun!

I've never done a "goals" post, but that's probably because I know that I'll be held accountable if I publish them...well there's a first time for everything...Wait, I did kind of do a goal post, and I totally failed. Dang! Okay, so here's my new set, hopefully making them public will help me to reach some of them!

Short Term

1. Go to bed by 10:30pm on "school nights"
2. Exercise 5-6 days a week: minimum 30 minutes and not the same exercise two days in a row.
3. Decrease my portion sizes and monitor fat intake...for being a nutritionist, I really don't take my own advise sometimes! I REALLY like cheese though. :)
4. Cook meals at home 90% of the time...If I eat breakfast, lunch and dinner that's 21 meals, that means I need to only eat out twice a week!
5. Drink 64oz of water a day (can be included in teas).
6. Visit a farmer's market twice a month and buy locally grown food.
7. Try one new recipe a week.
8. Try only sitting at work when I'm with a client. While making phone calls, or on the computer, stand or squat.
9. Read one new book by the end of March. OMG I can't remember the last time I finished a book that I started.
10. Do one thing a day that I know my husband will appreciate and will make him feel loved, (AND IT CAN'T BE THE SAME THING EVERY DAY).

Long Term (10-15years)

1. Start a personal business that is self sustaining.
2. Live in a certified energy efficient house.
3. Be debt free including house and car.
4. Live close enough to my work that I can ride my bike there and back, daily.
5. Have a baby! Or 2!

Plan

I feel that the best way to achieve a goal is to have a plan of attack. I think I will do some follow up blog posts to explain how I plan on executing some of my goals. We always tell people during nutrition counseling that the more specific you are, the more likely you are going to succeed in achieving your goal. My plan is to have one goal mastered before I work on the next so that I have habits created and it is easy to sustain my goals.

1. Go to bed by 10:30pm on "school nights" - my boss does a little thing where she will give herself a 'treat' for each goal that she accomplishes. I don't think that food should be a reward in most cases, but I'm going to make one exception: I LOVE Dutch Brother's coffee, a franchise we have here in Arizona, and for every Sunday-Thursday that I go to bed on time I will allow myself the purchase of a DUTCH BROS coffee on Friday morning. Woo Hoo! Oh and make someone OTHER than my husband or mom keep me accountable. Any volunteers? It's already 10:37 here! Lets see how this goes...

Meet Baby Zoe, I'm a Bad Blogger, Lactation Seminar

I acknowledge that I have not been a very good blogger this week, and I'm going to transfer the blame. I recently blogged about my nutrition background and how I work for WIC and this week I have been in all day lectures about breastfeeding and infant feeding. It's a week-long seminar put on by a wonderful team and lead by Molly Pessl BSN, IBCLC. If you don't know IBCLC stands for International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, and it's a VERY difficult certification to obtain. When I tell people about it usually their first response is "what could you possibly talk about for a whole week!" I assure them that there is PLENTY to talk about and if you are a mom who has breastfed I'm sure that you agree (or any mom for that matter). My thoughts on it are, if I can spend four years on a degree for adult nutrition which barely scathed the surface of lactation, a week doesn't even seem like enough for infants/breastfeeding! I am learning a lot though and it's extremely fascinating.

With that said, I have been dog-tired every day after getting home and mentally drained! I should have prepared a little better and scheduled posts for this week ahead of time, but sometimes I'm a fly by the seat of my pants blogger. So I want to leave you with a tad bit of visual fun, and somewhat baby related. My niece Zoe was born on the 5th of this month and Jim and I went down that weekend to meet her. Here are some of the photos!

I will return next week with another "Things that are Good for You" post as well as the next "Fashion Cambio, Blogger Edition." Thanks for your patience!

I don't know why my brother or Jim didn't make it into any pictures, maybe it's because we were the ones holding Zoe?!? Anyway, we're so blessed to have a new little niece, and can't wait to see her grow!

Keep it real,

Roo

Hello Vanny!

You may have noticed that my blog page has been looking very different as of late. Well I can attribute a lot of it to my blogger friend Vanessa. She is the creator of the blog "Hello Vanny" and is a  multi-talented blogger, photographer, artist, student, barista who is breaking into web design as well. She was a doll and lent me a hand with my new banner and cute little button you see there on the right. If you are interested in sprucing up your space on the inter-webs, hit her up, I know she would love to work with you.

On What Katie Ate Katie Quinn Davies goes into great detail to share her yummy recipe's and even better-she's fantastic at documenting and shares all of her adventures in cooking through photography! I can't help myself when it comes to her blog and all I want to do when I read it is buy a plane ticket to Australia and eat dinner with her every night! Thank you Katie oh so much for having a blog, it makes me happy. :)

Hair History

So again you might have noticed that I changed a lot on my blog. I've been annoyed lately because every time I would look at my page it has looked so cluttered! Ahhhh, I feel much better now, but I'm still looking for things to nix in order to clean up. :) Anyway, while looking through old pictures on my computer to change my look, I was reminded of all of the times I changed my hair color-I guess my blog was not the only thing I got antsy with! I thought that it was a little comical so I decided to share some of the transition pictures from brunette to blonde.

Enjoy.

{Photo taken by Erica Perkins}

This was when I was really dark, almost black-you can barely see my hair!

{Asher and me}

I figured that my hair was looking too dark, plus I had to dye my roots every few weeks to cover up my blonde the was growing in so I added some highlights...

{My Easter baskets-yes two-from Jim one year}

{San Diego when we got engaged}

So after Jim and I got engaged, it went into hyper drive to switch from odd, in between hair color to blonde for engagement and wedding pictures.

{Having a little too much fun at JB's birthday}

{Us at Disneyland. If you haven't noticed, I really like making that face}

{Out and about at Santarchy last year}

{New Year's Eve last year}

{Wedding, May 2, 2010}

So as you can see I've made a lot of changes over the last 2 years, not just the hair either! Engaged, graduated and married! I hope you enjoyed my little transformation of hair history, as well as the transforming of my blog.

DIY Hair Extensions

I know this is not your typical DIY project, but I think it's something that a lot of women think about and a lot of times either think is out of their budget or may even be looked down upon as "fake". So seeing as how I'm married and my husband knows all of the parts of me that are real, I figured "what the heck, he's the only one that matters anyway!" So here is my DIY for extensions, with all of the tips that I could come up with.

I'll start by saying I thought about getting extensions for a while, because my natural hair is pretty thin, and even though I can grow it out (after a loooong time), it ends up looking kind of scraggly and not as luxurious as I envision it. I have to admit I'm pretty obsessed with the blogging world; I like writing them but also reading as many as I can keep track of, and some of my favorite bloggers make me envious with their luscious locks.

Here's a couple of my favorite blogger hair-crushes...

I have wanted to get extensions for a while now, but permanent ones are expensive ($300 or more!) and they can be really uncomfortable and hard to deal with if you're an everyday kind of hair-washer (or even every other day). This is my perfect solution to my hair problem lack of hair problem!

The Materials...
  • Synthetic Hair (but in my hair dresser's words, "real" synthetic hair). Make sure that you get the kind that won't melt when you use a heating tool on it
  • Thread or string to sew clips onto hair
  • Snap Clips
  • Small needle (with an eye still big enough to get your string through
  • Scissors
*Tip, when choosing a needle, make sure that it is small enough to fit through the holes of your clips.

Process
This is a pretty self explanatory process, but here are some tips to help you succeed.
  • Cut the hair into even pieces, 1-2 inches wide depending on your preference and size of clips.
  • Gather the hair in one hand as you work to keep the string or thread from getting tangled as you sew.
  • Line the clip up with the edge of the strand and face it with the curve against the lining.
  • Sew a few stitches, over and under for each hole in the clip.

  • Be careful as you sew not to let your string catch the clip like this, if you don't notice in time, it will be a pain to undo.
  • When you are done, it should look something like this...

I make about 6-7 of them to wrap around the bottom of my head, under my layers, pretty much placing them anywhere under my ears in a row. Sometimes you have to back-comb to get some texture for the clips to dig into if you're like me and have fine hair.
Remember, don't spend too much on this, it's really not important to get the expensive ones, they range anywhere from $13-100. Mine were in the $50 range, simply because I had a unique hair color which was hard to match and I didn't have as many options. For most people finding a match is not a problem. The rest of the materials can be found at your local beauty shop as well, I went to Sally's.

Here are some of my "before and after" shots. :)

Before

After

Keep in mind, it might take a little bit for you to get into a groove with your sewing, and you might have to mess with them for a little bit once they're in to get the look that you want. You can always curl them and you can wash them and let them air dry as well-just don't get too rough with them.

I personally feel confident with these bad boys in, I think they're a lot of fun, and are a great thing to have for special occasions, a night out on the town, a wedding or even for up coming Halloween! This can be a great way to switch up your hair, without dropping a couple of bills!

Hope you enjoyed this DIY!

Roo

P.S. I just noticed how beige my house/pictures are! I'll work on slipping some color into my pictures next time. :)

You'll notice that I've change a lot about my blog lately, and you may have even noticed that the domain name is different. I am pretty new to the blogging world and as I tweak and adjust things on my blog to be the way that I like them, I notice more and more all of the things that I don't like and want to change. It's not that I didn't like it the way it was before, but now I just know more and am more capable of changing.

With that said, there are a lot of kinks to iron out still so bear with me. Let me know along the way if something looks great or if you have any kind suggestions you can add those too. Be patient though; some of the things that look one way now, will not look that way tomorrow or the day after so don't judge too soon. :)

Regardless, I hope you like it!

Roo

P.S. I know that you all have left me lovely comments and unfortunately with the little move I made to blogger I lost those. Please feel free to keep commenting though, and I appreciate all of your support!
